TorGuqin Gathering, Nov.9, 2008 Review

Thank you to all who have attended our gathering today, it was a great turnout of over 10 people! (Some people had to leave early and weren’t in this group photo, but don’t worry – we’ve got you other pictures!) Let’s review some of the happenings today.

***

The gathering officially starts at 1200h, but due to a piano recital in the next room, we had to relocate from the North Dining Room to the Committees Room, on the other wing of Hart House (they wanted our nice chairs, hmph!). After much hustle-bustle, we were able to get underway by 1230h.

Date: Nov. 8, 2008 (Sun.)
Time: 1230h
Attendees: 12 (just enough cups!)
Tea Served: Hangzhou White Chrysanthemum, slightly sweetened; provided by Regan Zheng
Guqin participants: Terry W., Alex R., Alex Tsang (FXKQS), Juni Yeung (FXKQS)

Pieces played:

Alex R.: 陋室銘 Inscription on a Simple Room,
Alex T.: 白雪 White Snow,
Dialogue of the Fisherman and Woodcutter,
Twin Cranes Listening to the Stream
Come Away Home
Spring Dawn in Peach Springs
Song Yu Laments on Autumn

Discussions involved:

– Winter ’08 Hanfu Order (by both HanfuTor and TorGuqin)
– Personal anecdotes on learning the instrument, interests on Chinese culture
– Potential from studying new experimentation of guqin pieces, using Gaoshan Liushui as example
– Differences in learning guqin by oral tradition vs. institutional method
– Silk strings
– How to tune a guqin quickly (harmonics)

Without further ado, let’s take a look at a few more pictures (Click on image to expand):
